25th- JANUARY SPARKLING DISCOVERY
We will soon have a sparkling activity for our 2nd years at Institut Bernat Metge and, as
we saw that the Cullinan, the largest diamond in the world was found on the 25th of January in 1905, we thought we could speak about diamonds today.
Diamonds sparkle when they are cut by the jeweller. Marcel Tolkowsky was the Belgian physicist who perfected this art in 1919: he studied diamond optics and discovered the 57-facet “brilliant cut”, which maximises sparkle. The light travels through the stone in a way that it looks as though it came from the diamond itself.
